Panthalassa is magical island. Where else can you spot dinosaurs roaming the shore while you roar past in your speedboat on the way to finish line in a boat race?
After the race, surf the waves, go sailing or swim with the many water creatures. After that you can practice your aim with bows and arrows on the archery field.
All of this has been created by a gifted scripter who goes by the name of Kayaker Magic. Kayaker has been building in virtual worlds for almost eight years.
“Back in 2008, I signed up for SL because I read the TOS. Yes, most people don’t read this. But I was fascinated by a section in it that said “If you write self replicating objects, you must keep them from lagging the servers”. You mean a) it is possible to write self replicating objects?!! and b) It is ALLOWED?!! So I signed up to write scripts for things like plants that throw seeds and reproduce. Unfortunately it turns out to be very difficult to avoid exponential growth so I became discouraged with self replication and eventually always ended up using iterative growth for any practical plants.”
Kayaker was kind enough to answer a few questions about this amazing opensim region.
What was your inspiration in creating this world?
I wanted a lot of water for my sailboats to sail on, so it is around 3 quarters water. The name Panthalassa is the name given to the world ocean before continental drift split the continents apart. I could have named the land Pangaea, but at the time I had only swimming dinosaurs so I named the world after the water instead of the land. I designed the terrain in GIMP to smoothly flow from one region to another. I’m not fond of terrain designs where the land looks like it was crammed into a square shape. I want it to be difficult to tell where the 256m borders are!
I built a pre-historic look, a volcano and craters that look like they were created by a cluster of meteorite strikes. And I wanted a sea cave to paddle kayaks through like the caves in the coastline of my native California.
What do you want people to do here?
I hope people will have fun here! There is a lot to do: Try out sailboats, wind surfers, kayaks on the white water rivers, body surfing and surfboards on the waves. Find your way into the Secret Lair (I should put a mad scientists laboratory in there but have not had time). There is a shooting range for trying out all the demo weapons like guns, bows and arrows.
The rain forest has Pandoran Ikran in the canopy of the trees and Yerik to hunt at ground level. The most recent additions have been more dinosaurs to hunt! There is a Lost World Big Game Dinosaur Hunting Lodge now with dino heads mounted on the walls and dino rugs on the floor. I have a store, the Chandlery, but it mostly sells parts for boats. I can sell these in an in-world store because they are near full perm (all but the NOMOD scripts) and can be taken “home” over the hypergrid to build into your own boats. Things like compasses and speedometers with needles that actually turn when you drive around in your boat.
What are your hopes for the future of this project?
I’m going to finish furnishing the Lost World Lodge and have Dinosaur Safaris! I started out thinking I was going to concentrate on making things for the water, hence the name of my store “Ocean Engineering”. But when I made the Yerik (a 6 legged critter from the movie Avatar) I wanted it to be huntable. I found there were no weapons available and started making my own. This encouraged me to make more huntable animals. I thought I was done doing weapons development, but made cannons you can mount on boats. Now I have machine guns that you can mount on aircraft.
I don’t see an aircraft script that i like in Open Sim, so I guess I’ll have to develop my own. Soon you will be able to come and do aerial dogfighting or shoot down planes with an anti-aircraft gun.
At Panthalasa, Kayker Magic has created a continent full of fun.
